The History of the King Cake
In New Orleans' revelry and religious tradition are
the ties that bind during Mardi Gras. Thus, its not surprising that
the origin of the modern King Cake can be traced back to the Middle
Ages, when popular devotion during Christmas turned to the three
Wise Men, or Kings, who had followed a star and paid homage to
Christ epiphany, the end of the Christmas celebration and the 12th
night after the birth of Christ, came to be known as "12th Night", a
time for pageants and giving special "King" presents to children.
Today in New Orleans, the King Cake is an oval-shaped
braided coffee cake which is decorated with cinnamon sugar in the
official Mardi Gras colors- gold (for power), green (faith), and
purple (justice) - and contains a tiny plastic baby that has
replaced the coin used in medieval times. The person who gets the
slice containing the baby must host the next party. At some parties
they are crowned king or queen.
The cake, a gift shared by family, friends, and
revelers alike, is eaten between the 12th night and Fat Tuesday, the
beginning of Lent. However, the cake often begins appearing before
Christmas.
Lubeley's King Cakes are available in Cinnamon, Cream
Cheese/Pecan, Chocolate, & Strawberry. |

The Worlds Greatest
Sandwich
The bread is a large, round, and somewhat flat loaf,
around 10 inches (25 cm) across. It has a sturdy texture, and is
described as being somewhat similar to
focaccia.
The Muffaletta sandwich originated in New Orleans
during 1906. It quickly became popular with city natives and
visitors from all walks of life and has been described as "one of
the great sandwiches of the world". As any visitor to New Orleans
will tell you it certainly lives up to its reputation!
Central Grocery located in historic New Orleans still
serves the sandwich using their original recipe; however, other
variations of this sandwich are served throughout the city of New
Orleans.
The locals have differing opinions on which shop
serves the best muffaletta. A typical muffaletta consists of one
muffaletta loaf, split horizontally. The loaf is then covered with a
marinated
olive salad, then layers of ham,
salami, mozzarella, and provolone. The olive salad is considered the
heart of the sandwich, and consists primarily of olives, along with
celery, cauliflower, and carrot. The ingredients are combined,
seasonings are added, covered in olive oil and allowed to combine
for at least 24 hours. The sandwich is often heated through to
soften the provolone. |

Ever Tried Our
Paczki?
A Paczki (pronounced "poonch-key" is
an old-world Polish Donut. It uses a much richer batter than a
traditional donut. They are most commonly filled with raspberry;
however Lubeley's Bakery offers Lemon, Raspberry, Chocolate, and
Bavarian Crème.
The story behind the Paczki is
widely debated; most say that in the United States, Paczki Day takes
place the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, traditionally called Fat
Tuesday. American bakeries supply Paczki in the hundreds of
thousands on this day. If you haven't tried a fresh baked Paczki you
don't know what your missing! |
